Merlin, based in Poole, England, said he considered sites closer to Orlando for the company's first Florida park. But he said Cypress Gardens, with its natural beauty and existing structures, fit with the company's plan.
Merlin is the world's second largest tourist attraction business behind Walt Disney Co. Merlin bought the park for $22.3 million, reports the Ledger.
Varney pledged to maintain some traditional elements of Cypress Gardens, one of Florida's oldest existing theme parks. He said the decades-old botanical gardens will be preserved, possibly with the name Cypress Gardens.
"The botanical gardens will always be one of the compelling reasons why people should come here," Varney said. "I can assure any of you who were concerned that the gardens of Cypress Gardens are very, very safe in our hands."
Varney also plans to resume the water-ski shows on Lake Eloise "with a Lego twist". The adjacent Splash Island Water Park will most likely be retained as a separate attraction.
Legoland Florida will be the larger than any other existing Legoland--one in California and one in Europe. The park will eventually become a resort and have a least one hotel.
