Highgate Park : More local news and events from in and around the Highgate Park Davenport area as Business and economic-development leaders gave their input to state lawmakers last week on how to create jobs in Florida. It went something like this: Get off our backs and get on our side.

In other words, the state needs to do a much better job of reducing the cost of doing business, minimizing time-consuming regulatory red tape and creating some stability so ventures looking to invest in Florida know what to expect from one year to the next.

"Government probably shouldn't be in the position of creating jobs," said Philip Holt, vice president and studio general manager for Orlando-based EA Tiburon, the subsidiary of video game maker Electronic Arts. "We should leave that to the private marketplace. But I think (government) can greatly facilitate the marketplace's ability to create jobs."

Holt's comments were part of the familiar theme business leaders presented to state lawmakers at the 2010 Florida Jobs Summit. About 300 people attended the daylong event at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando.
