Space shuttle Endeavour is expected to launch Saturday to the international space station. At Cape Canaveral, Florida the NASA managers have given a unanimous "go" to Saturday's launch of space shuttle Endeavour. Mission managers on Thursday cleared Endeavour for its flight to the international space station. Good weather is expected. Endeavour and its crew of seven will deliver the final piece of Japan's $1 billion space station lab. The astronauts will install an outdoor shelf for experiments and attach some big spare parts outside the station. Five spacewalks are planned.
The seven shuttle fliers will join six men already at the space station. It will be the first time 13 people are together in space at one time
At least nine members of the U.S. House are expected to watch Saturday’s launch of the space shuttle Endeavour. U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach, organized the trip to help build congressional support for NASA’s human spaceflight program.
“With so few launches left before Shuttle retirement, I want my colleagues to fully grasp what it would mean for our country to have a prolonged period of time without direct access to space or the International Space Station,” said Kosmas in a statement.
Current NASA plans call for the shuttle’s retirement in 2010 or 2011. Its replacement, however, won’t be ready until at least 2015 and NASA must rely on the Russians to ferry American astronauts to the International Space Station during that gap.
