Cocoa Beach Crocs

As reported in the local Orlando press, apparently, some reptiles other than sea turtles have been frequenting the area around Cocao Beach. The beaches around the area have been buzzing with the news that an American crocodile caught by the Cocoa Beach Pier over the weekend and a that a very mysterious set of tracks on the beach near the Pineda Causeway have been found. The critter found under the pier was thought to be an alligator but wildlife folks were surprised they actually trapped an American crocodile, just a little over 4 feet long.

Joy Hill, a spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was quoted as saying "the crocodile was caught but then released." Crocodiles are unusual in Central Florida. Their current range is south Florida, but may be expanding in range A trapper was sent to the beach by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission who then spotted spied the alligator.

The American crocodile is much rarer than the alligator. Of course, alligators are so plentiful they can be hunted during season and are regularly trapped on nuisance calls. Crocodiles, however, are protected as a "threatened" species under federal law.

A wonderful gated community in Orlando. A fine selection of luxury vacation villas in Orlando Florida.
